Are You Wearing £1000 Worth Of Attire Today?

A recent report suggests that women wear, on average, £1000-worth of clothing a day and that men are coming in at just £100 less wearing approximately £900-worth of clothing a day.

Erm, hello! No-one asked me… Mrs Cheapskate over here in the corner.  I am either very frugal and at the lower end of the “average” or I don’t believe in buying designer products to express my style.

Today, I am wearing:

Black jumper: £8.99 (Ethel Austin), Zebra print skirt: £2.00 (eBay bargain a couple of years ago), black boots: £40.00 (in a sale, also two years ago), underwear: £11.50 (yes, all of it – from Matalan and Tesco), bracelet: price unknown (as it it a Troll Bead bracelet and keeps getting added to), earrings: price unknown (present from the children – probably Argos), wedding and engagement ring: sentimental value.

Total: £62.49

include depreciation for older items of clothing

add my coat £15 Asda special from 2 winters ago

We’re still not even up to £100.

I have the odd item of clothing/footwear that I’ve splurged on but, seriously, I’m hardly into triple figures.  What about you?  Dress to impress, dress for comfort and practicality, only buy designer label or are you a bargain hunter?

  • i donot think it is worth 1000 dollor

  • One of my favourite topics! I genuinely see no need to spend a fortune on clothes to look good. Today my outfit (which I was complimented on) cost £27 - jeans (£6), dress (£7), boots (£5), underwear (£9).

  • Today I am dressed shabbily .... JW tracksuit bottoms (£70ish), All Saints sweater (£50ish), Uggs (£120), underwear (£20) ....

But even when I am dresssed up with my most expensive things:

    Prada handbag (£250)
    Louboutin Shoes (£300)
    Fancy Dress (£200)
    Undies (£50)

I am still a bit off.......

But then I think about my engagement ring which cost a couple of grand, and my diamond studs, a couple of hundred, and then I realise I am always wearing at least a grands worth!!!

  • £1000?! As an average?

Erm, no. Today I'm wearing black leggings (around £8), a black vest (around £5) and a big long cardigan thing (around £20).

I have been known to splurge on clothes, but even at my worst I don't think a single outfit would have come to £1000...

  • £1000? I honestly doubt I have £1000 worth of clothes in my wardrobe. But I do know I have a terrible post maternity wardrobe. But seriously, the most expensive thing I own is a £250 bridesmaids dress I wore at 7 months pregnant, so not really likely to wear again soon! That aside - I'd be surprised if there was anywhere near £1000 in my cupboard!

  • suzie

I am wearing track suit bottoms & a zip up jogging top - probably about 30 pounds from sports world! I dont think my whole wardrobe adds up to one thousand pounds! All my money goes on baby clothes!

  • Kittt

Grey Joggers, White Vest Top, Black Cardigan

  • onerubberband

Tshirt £2.50 Primark, 2 year old jeans £12 from Asda, tunic £19 in the La Redoute sale about 5 years ago, undies asda £12, clarks sandals approx 10 years old about £35, necklace £2 from a thrift shop. Total £82.50 not to mention that all my clothes are recycled either through Sally Army, Mind or if it was expensive on Ebay (money used to buy more clothes!). I do have expensive clothes. I probably wear more like £200-300 a day for work because of suits but those suits last me a minimum of 3 years and my going out clothes may be about the same but again I only have a few bits and they last me years, I'm not arsed if someone's seen my green dress 3 thousand times or not. I have seen people at work who wear around £1k a day worth of clothing, end of the day they're just in a suit too.

  • Such a good point in your last sentence... clothes cover the body - it doesn't really matter how little/much they cost

  • What makes me gasp ever so slightly is the fact that the £1000 is the average!! All the comments so far seem to be at the lower end of the scale - frugality at it's best - but if we're all spending very little and wearing cheaper clothes then exactly how much are the people at the higher end spending for the research to average out at £1000?

Come on big spenders... share with us ;)

  • I wonder how many of those surveyed have kids?!

  • Most of the WAGs have and that's who has been "surveyed" probably - as in... oh that dress is from xxx designer, that bracelet is from xxx jewellers, that watch is a Rolex... all whilst looking at paparazzi pictures of them on the way to a premier or something.

  • I'm currently sat in my dressing gown which cost £12 but once I get dressed I think I'm most likely to wear next jeans £10 in the sale and a tshirt which could range from £2-£6. It's crazy to spend that much on clothes! I always try to buy my clothes in the sale as that way I can afford to buy more! Underwear will most likely be peacocks bargains :)
I bought a dress back in October for my birthday and that cost £60 , I've felt guilty every since for spending that much on one thing.
I'm still feeling guilty about the boots I bought from faith back when I was 18 that cost £100!!

  • Today I'm wearing a nursing bra from Debenham £25, a top from primark £2, leggings from George £5 and socks from primark 50p! So all in all £32.50! How bad is it that my bra is my most expensive item???

  • I'd love to know whom this report refers to, probably WAGS or the millionaires of Knightsbridge cos it certainly 'aint me!

    CJ xx

  • Exactly - that's not our type of "average" is it?

  • Today I am mainly wearing... Jeans: £14 Littlewoods in the sale, Grey vest: £3.00 Tesco, Underwear: £11 Littlewoods & Asda, Socks: 40p (£2 for 5 pairs, asda!) and my Converse were free! 1 x earing: gift, 1 x necklace: gift, 1 x eternity ring, engagement and wedding ring: from Hubby.
So total amount I spent on today's attire = £28.40.
I refuse to buy designer. What's the point when you can get same style cheaper!
It might only be chill out stuff, but 1st thing hubby said as he walked through door just then was, "Aahh, you look nice" :) I'm happy at that!

The only thing I am specific about is hair products... that's cause I'm part of the curly crew and have no choice but to spend on expensive styling products to control a potential 'Brian May' disaster.

    Beat that!???

  • helen snape

I am wearing full tracksuit from asda £24, socks £1 asda, underwear £4 sale in asda, n my lovely leopard print slippers which were a gift. Not far behind you manda at £29!!!

I refuse to wear designer gear at crazy prices, and do not dress my kids in designer either.

  • Ooooh I'm currently in the lead as the biggest cheapo!
